What do the numbers measure?

For an ordinary straight stitch, length is the distance along the seam between successive needle penetrations. A millimeter setting describes distance, not speed or thread tension. Stitch width concerns sideways movement; on some straight-stitch selections, the width control changes needle position instead.

The Brother PC-6500 operation manual, pages 31–33, distinguishes width and length and shows millimeter values. Its straight-stitch automatic length is 2.5 mm. That is a model-specific example, not a setting to transfer blindly.

If a manual instead uses stitches per inch, the relationship reverses: a larger count means shorter stitches. Keep the unit beside the number in your notes.

The bernette b35 English manual, June 2023 revision, page 34, gives approximately 2.5 mm for normal straight seams and recommends longer stitching for basting or firmer fabrics such as jeans. Its chart lists 1.5–4.0 for that straight-stitch selection.

On page 33, the same manual lists an overly long stitch among possible puckering causes and overly fine stitches among possible feeding problems. Threading and needle mismatches appear elsewhere in its troubleshooting chart. A symptom is a reason to check the combination, not permission to turn every dial.

What changes for topstitching?

Topstitching remains visible on the finished item. Reproduce the thread and layers that will sit beneath the visible line.

In BERNINA educator Jaime David's jeans article, she prefers a length setting of 3–3.5 for her topstitching and explicitly distinguishes it from the construction seam. This is her jeans-specific preference, not a strength guarantee or a rule for every garment.

Why are basting and gathering different?

Basting is temporary stitching. Gathering uses stitching or another specified method to reduce a longer fabric edge into controlled fullness. They can share a technique without serving the same final purpose.

Seamwork's gathering tutorial uses long basting rows, draws up the bobbin threads, then sews the construction seam and removes the temporary threads. It warns that its method can leave permanent holes in delicate or loosely woven material. Do not assume removable thread means invisible needle marks.

Special accessories change the method too. BERNINA's gathering overview distinguishes cord-based gathering, a ruffler and an overlocker setup. This guide does not transfer those accessory settings to a normal straight stitch. Follow one complete, compatible method rather than combining unrelated settings.

Build a useful sample record

Use scraps of the actual project fabric with the same layers and seam direction. The following is an editorial recording method, not a tested recipe for a particular textile.

  1. Write the machine model, stitch, units, needle, threads, layers and intended job on a separate record.
  2. Copy the permitted starting setting from the manual or pattern.
  3. Sew a sample only after completing the machine's documented setup and safety checks.
  4. Remove it as directed and inspect it away from moving parts. Note puckering, missing stitches, visible holes and the spacing.
  5. If the machine operates normally but the result needs comparison, test another permitted length while leaving other variables unchanged.
  6. Keep the samples with their notes. Record observations, not just “good” or “bad.”

Record what you observed on that sample, not a universal verdict such as “3 is best.”

Check a measured span without counting the wrong thing

Here is an invented arithmetic example, not measured machine output. Suppose the distance from the first to the twenty-first penetration is 50 mm.

There are 20 intervals, not 21. Average spacing is 50 ÷ 20 = 2.5 mm. A second hypothetical 60 mm span across 20 intervals averages 3 mm.

Count consecutive intervals within an ordinary forward straight-stitch section. Do not mix in reverse securing, missing stitches or a decorative repeat. A ruler observation is not a machine calibration certificate, and an average can hide uneven individual stitches.

Record setting, span, interval count, average and appearance. Leave results blank until observed.

Keep the test within safe operating limits

The PC-6500 manual's safety instructions require fingers clear of moving parts, prohibit pushing or pulling fabric during stitching, and route damaged or malfunctioning machines to authorized service. Follow the equivalent instructions for your exact model.

Stop before changing settings and use the documented needle position. Switch off and unplug before needle-area work or removing parts. Keep pins outside the stitching path.
