Bobbin direction is not universal. Neither is the direction in which a handwheel should be turned.

Find the model number on the machine, then use the manufacturer's manual for:

Singer's current manual library provides model-specific threading diagrams and maintenance directions. Use the equivalent official source for another brand. A video for a machine that merely looks similar can put the thread or bobbin on the wrong side of a tension spring.

Set up the needle and bobbin first

Unplug the machine or use its documented lockout before working around the needle area. Remove the foot control from accidental reach. If the needle is bent, blunt, burred, incorrectly inserted, or wrong for the fabric and thread, replace it before diagnosing tension. Use the exact bobbin class named in the manual. Two clear plastic bobbins can appear identical while differing enough in height or profile to feed poorly. Do not substitute by sight.

Wind the bobbin through the machine's bobbin-winding guide so the thread lays evenly. Stop at the maker's fill line or automatic stop rather than forcing extra thread onto it. Cut the tail as the manual directs. If the winding is soft, lopsided, loose, or crossed with loops, rewind it; an uneven bobbin introduces a variable before sewing begins.

Insert a drop-in bobbin or bobbin case exactly as illustrated. The thread must travel through the intended slot and under any tension spring shown. Do not memorize “clockwise” or “counterclockwise” as a universal rule.

Thread the upper path with the presser foot raised

Raising the presser foot commonly opens the upper tension discs so the thread can seat between them. Singer's machine FAQ identifies upper-thread looping beneath the fabric as a common result of missing the upper tension path and tells users to thread with the presser foot up.

Use this sequence, while letting the manual decide the exact direction around each guide:

  1. Put the spool on the correct pin and fit the right spool cap or support.
  2. Raise the presser foot.
  3. Bring the needle and take-up lever to the documented highest or threading position.
  4. Hold the thread with light control so it enters the first guide rather than floating beside it.
  5. Follow the printed or numbered path through the tension channel.
  6. Catch the take-up lever completely. On an enclosed machine, check from the side or use a light rather than assuming.
  7. Pass through the needle-bar guide and any final hook.
  8. Thread the needle in the direction shown for the model, leaving the tail length specified by the manual.

Do not thread with the machine running. Keep fingers away from the needle and thread-cutter mechanism. If the machine has an automatic threader, use it only in the needle position and with the needle sizes its manual permits; do not force a hook that does not align.

Bring up the bobbin thread only when the model requires it

Some machines require the upper thread to pull a loop of bobbin thread through the needle plate. Others have a quick-set bobbin system and trim the bobbin tail below the cover.

For a manual pickup system, hold the upper thread tail lightly, turn the handwheel only in the direction specified by the manual, and complete one needle cycle. Pull the upper tail until the bobbin loop rises, then use a blunt tool or the thread tail—not fingers near the needle—to bring the loop fully through. Sweep both tails under the presser foot and toward the rear.

If no loop appears, stop. Check that the bobbin is inserted and threaded through its slot, the upper thread is through the needle and take-up lever, the needle is fully seated, and the bobbin-winding mode is disengaged. Do not keep cycling the machine with a growing tangle below the plate.

What does sewing-machine tension actually control?

In a balanced straight stitch, the upper and bobbin threads interlock within the fabric layers. Brother's current tension guide illustrates that the upper thread should appear on the right side and the bobbin thread on the wrong side, with the crossing hidden between them.

The numbered upper-tension setting controls resistance on the needle thread. A higher number usually adds upper-thread tension and a lower number usually reduces it, but the useful starting point is the model's normal or default range, not a number borrowed from a different machine.

Fabric thickness, thread size, needle size, stitch design, stabilizer, and the number of layers can change the result. Decorative and satin stitches may intentionally pull some upper thread to the back. Diagnose with the same stitch, fabric, thread, needle, and layers that the project will use.

Make a test seam you can actually read

Use two layers of project fabric, not a single unrelated scrap. Thread the needle and bobbin with contrasting colours of the same thread type and size during diagnosis. That makes it possible to tell which system is appearing on the wrong side.

Set a basic straight stitch and the manual's normal upper tension. Lower the presser foot. Hold thread tails only as the manual recommends for the first few stitches, then sew a 10-to-15-centimetre test line at a moderate speed. Add a second line across the fabric grain if the project will sew in both directions.

Read both faces:

Brother's guide explicitly says incorrect threading can imitate an upper-tension fault. Rethreading is therefore a diagnostic step, not busywork.

Fix tension problems in this order

1. Return to a known baseline

Record the current upper-tension setting, then return it to the manual's normal setting. Select an ordinary straight stitch and remove unusual attachments that are not needed for the test.

2. Replace or reseat the needle

Switch off or lock out the machine. Insert a new, compatible needle fully and in the direction shown in the manual. Match its type and size to the fabric and thread.

3. Rethread both systems

Remove the upper thread completely. Raise the presser foot and rethread from the spool through every guide. Remove and reinstall the bobbin through its correct slot and spring. Do not pull a shortcut section of thread backward through guides if the manual tells you to cut and remove it another way.

4. Clean only as the manual permits

Lint in the bobbin area or thread path can interfere with feeding. Switch off and unplug as directed, remove only the covers the user manual permits, and use the specified brush or method. Do not blow lint deeper into the machine, add oil without a documented oiling point, or dismantle a tension unit.

5. Sew a fresh test

Lower the presser foot and sew the same scrap again. If the seam is now balanced, the cause was setup or debris; no dial change is needed.

6. Move the upper dial one small step

If upper thread is still visible underneath, increase upper tension by one small marked increment. If bobbin thread is still visible on top after correct bobbin installation, reduce upper tension by one small increment. Sew a new labelled line after each change.

Stop after a few controlled steps. A large dial swing can hide the original fault and create a second one.

Do not start with the bobbin-case screw

Many domestic bobbin cases are factory set. A screw adjustment changes a second system and is difficult to reverse precisely without a reference position or tension measurement. Singer's FAQ says bobbin tension is generally preset and places correct insertion and upper threading ahead of any screw change.

Use a bobbin-tension adjustment only when the exact machine manual gives the procedure for the specific task, or have a qualified sewing-machine technician assess it. This is especially important when the machine suddenly misbehaves after sewing correctly on the same fabric and settings; damage, a burr, timing, or a thread-path problem may be involved.

Do not sew through resistance, scrape marks, repeated needle strikes, smoke, burning smell, exposed wiring, or a damaged power cord. Switch off, unplug, and have the machine assessed by an authorized or qualified repair professional.

Save the setup that works

Once the test seam is balanced, write down the machine model, needle system and size, upper thread, bobbin thread, fabric layers, stitch, upper-tension setting, and any stabilizer. Staple or photograph the labelled sample.

That record is more useful than a universal “perfect tension” number. The next time the same project combination appears, you have a tested starting point—and a clean baseline for spotting what changed.
